چکیده

Long-wavelength SAR backscattering from glacier ice is of high relevance for glaciological applications since it contains information about both surface and subsurface structure of the ice. For this reason, SAR sensors can be used to discriminate and delineate the different glacier facies and to extract information on the ice density, which today can only be estimated on point basis. In this paper, the authors focus on the modeling of polarimetric SAR (Pol-SAR) signatures of the percolation zone of the Austfonna ice cap, in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway. Incidence angle and frequency dependencies are deeply investigated and included in the model. A first assessment of the proposed model is finally performed by comparison with Land P-band airborne Pol-SAR data collected by DLR’s E-SAR system over the selected test site in 2007, during the ICESAR campaign.

The search for seismic signatures of movement at the glacier bed in a polythermal valley glacier

A passive seismology experiment was conducted across the main overdeepening of Storglaciären in the Tarfala valley, northern Sweden, to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of basal microseismic waveforms in relation to known dynamics of this small polythermal sub-arctic glacier. The high ablation rate made it difficult to keep geophones buried and well coupled to the glacier durin...

Drainage-system development in consecutive melt seasons at a polythermal, Arctic glacier, evaluated by flow-recession analysis and linear-reservoir simulation

[1] The drainage systems of polythermal glaciers play an important role in high-latitude hydrology, and are determinants of ice flow rate. Flow-recession analysis and linear-reservoir simulation of runoff time series are here used to evaluate seasonal and inter-annual variability in the drainage system of the polythermal Finsterwalderbreen, Svalbard, in 1999 and 2000. Linear-flow recessions are...

Hierarchical Classification of Polarimetric Sar Image Based on Statistical Region Merging

Segmentation and classification of polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) imagery are very important for interpretation of PolSAR data. This paper presents a new object-oriented classification method which is based on Statistical Region Merging (SRM) segmentation algorithm and a two-level hierarchical clustering technique. The proposed method takes full advantage of the polarimetric information contained in...

Modelling Polsar Scattering Signatures at Long Wavelengths of Glacier Ice Volumes

The crucial role of cryosphere for understanding the global climate change has been widely recognized in recent decades [1]. Glaciers and ice sheets are the main components of the cryosphere and constitute the basic reservoir of fresh water for high-latitudes and many densely populated areas at mid and low latitudes. The need of information on large scale and the inaccessibility of polar region...

Application of remote sensing data in measuring the area of the Zardkuh glaciers

Glaciers influenced by climatic factors and therefore as an important indicator in the study of climate change are studied. Although morphometric analyzes of glaciers based on the analysis of optical satellite data can provide an opportunity to measure ice outcrops, but the identification and determination of the buried glaciers underneath the glacial debris and, consequently, the determination...
